I’m not very unique

14 Sep
14 September 2012

Like every kid, I grew up being told I was special and unique. But as my birthday approaches, a friend shared with me this data on birth date frequencies that is yet another reason to believe I was lied to.

September 16th is the most common birth date in the US, which means I missed out by a day. September is easily the most concentrated month, yet I haven’t seen any good justification, except the easiest conclusion involving conception and holidays.Seems like an easy jump to make, but I’m hoping for something slightly more unique – I’ll have to ask my parents.

Welcoming the Prime Minister

14 Mar
14 March 2012

Thanks to a good friend, I was able to attend the arrival ceremony for UK Prime Minister David Cameron at the White House as part of his official visit to the United States. I’ve watched these on TV a few times and always loved the pageantry, as hokey as it may be to some.

Celebrating a little

15 Dec
15 December 2011

Today, we graduated with master’s degrees from the London School of Economics. What a relief it was to stand together with classmates in celebration after reaching the end of what seemed to be a very long road. It’s been many months since we completed our coursework, and many have moved on to other countries and taken jobs in various fields. It was a reminder that the most valuable thing gained in our time at LSE was the friendships and connections we made.

The Graduate 4.0

12 Mar
12 March 2011

I was asked to photograph the fourth and final party of the LSE Students’ Union Postgraduate Assembly last night.  It was held in LSE’s Quad, a café and meeting place by day and club by night.  There was a great showing and a masterful set by one of LSE’s own postgrad DJs, Ted Giletti.

UPO Talks Green Living

26 Jun
26 June 2010

The United Planning Organization is a community action agency in Washington, DC that serves to empower and educate residents through events and training.  Earlier this month they held an event on sustainable living in the newly reopened Eastern Market on Capitol Hill.  I was along to photograph the event and provide material for their new website.  A selection of photos is below.  Click to expand.

Buddha Bar

6 May 2010

Buddha Bar, the swank bar well-known in cities like New York, Cairo and London, opened in Washington yesterday to a grand opening with famous-for-DC types.  I was asked by the designer’s public relations team to document the event and space.  It was a fun event and should be a welcome addition to the fancier lounging crowd.  A selection of photos is below.  Click to enlarge.

Photo Experiments

Joined up with the fine folks at Brightest Young Things and photographed an event at Wonderland Ballroom last week.  Read the story and see the photos.

A note from SXSW

17 Mar
17 March 2010

Amid all the announcements, hype and “location wars”, this is my favorite observation from this year’s SXSW Interactive festival in Austin, TX.  From CNN:

These aren’t your father’s CEOs

If there was a pinstripe suit in Austin this week, we didn’t see it.

The movers and shakers of the online world are young, casual and come at business from a different angle than their Wall Street forbearers (a fact not lost on SXSW Web Awards host Doug Benson, who joked that acceptance speeches would all be short because the winners weren’t used to being out of their basements).

But there’s nothing like seeing tech’s youthful leaders for yourself — and all in one place.

Once you’ve watched a company founder tossing fuzzy dice into a crowd of screaming fans or doing the backstroke on the floor of the Hilton lobby at 2 a.m., you won’t think of “CEO” the same way ever again.
