Trooping the Colour

11 Jun
11 June 2011

Living so close to Buckingham Palace is particularly useful when one loves parades.  And this country loves marching.  I went down to the Mall this morning to watch Trooping the Colour, a ceremony marking the Queen’s official birthday. It was a fascinating event.  It’s easy to forget that the participants in this parade are all active soldiers in the British Army.  Most have served, or will soon serve, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Here’s a better explanation from the monarchy’s website:

Although The Queen was born on 21 April, it has long been the tradition to celebrate the Sovereign’s birthday publicly on a day in the summer, when good weather is more likely.  Trooping the Colour is carried out by fully trained and operational troops from the Household Division (Foot Guards and Household Cavalry) on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, watched by members of the Royal Family, invited guests and members of the public. Epic Snow

20 Dec
20 December 2010

London was hit with a snowstorm this weekend that crippled the city.  Central London saw only 3 or 4 inches, with greater accumulations in the north and west.  All the airports were shut, the Tube was halted and cars were somewhat absent.  Saturday morning’s snow globe made for some fun photos.

Living in Trafalgar Square means I don’t have far to slide to get it done, either.  The snow is so thick and wet that it was hard to keep the camera dry and the lens clear, but that’s what sealed seams are for, amiright?  The photo above is kind of fun because there are several scenes in one.  Click on it to see it larger.

Fortunately, I made it out on the first flight back to the United States when most of the following days’ flights were still cancelled.  Happy to be home.

A Modern Looking Glass

17 Oct
17 October 2010

Allow me to geek out a bit.  This isn’t anything all that new, but I’d never seen it for myself and thought I’d share a little.

Have you ever been walking down the sidewalk or standing in a square and wondered what you were looking at?  Perhaps a bit about the architecture, the history of a particular building, or whether that restaurant with that great happy hour deal is in fact any good?

Enter Augmented Reality.  These applications for iPhone, Android and others use the phone’s camera, GPS, accelerometer and compass to overlay graphical information on the live camera view.  Hold the camera up to the building, and peer through the looking glass to reveal the dense world of information behind it.

On my way home from the gym yesterday, I stopped in Trafalgar Square to give acrossair a spin…literally.  See my photos below with Wikipedia entries floating about.  You can also display Yelp reviews, bars, subways and more.  Really incredible stuff.  I look forward  to (read: dread) wearing contact lenses that do the same thing in a few years.

I’m moving to London

09 Apr
9 April 2010

I’m pretty excited.  In September, I will move to London to begin a master’s program at the London School of Economics.  The year-long program, MSc Politics & Communication, addresses the changing relationship between politics, the media and global communications.  What interests me the most is the impact of technology and the Internet on political discourse and citizen engagement.

Leaving DC after 7 years won’t be easy.  I love my friends here and have enjoyed the collegiate and professional life.  Transitioning from my nice apartment to a tiny dorm room may also have its challenges.  But, it’s time for an adventure and I’m thrilled to take it in Europe.

September may seem a litte far off, but I figure it will come rather quickly.  I will continue in my current job through much of June before taking some time off for all that “personal exploration” stuff, to master my skills at eBay and Craigslist, to travel home for a big family reunion, and, of course, to start studying.  I will also try to find some source of income so my roommate doesn’t kick me out.

As for after LSE, I’m not there yet.  Right now, I’m just focusing on this Visa…
